Bicyclists can be found throughout the Napa Valley. Highway 29 is a popular stretch. There is a bike lane on the frontage road (Solano Avenue) that runs along the west side of Highway 29 from Napa to Yountville. North of Yountville you're on your own. If you're going to continue north, watch out for the railroad tracks crossing Highway 29 at Whitehall Lane south of St. Helena. Many inattentive cyclists have hit the asphalt here.
Silverado Trail has bike lanes all the way from Napa to Calistoga. The main caution here is the drivers, who travel much faster on this road than on Highway 29.
South of Napa, in the Carneros District that overlaps both Napa and Sonoma counties, you'll find the least traffic—and cooler temperatures. There are low, rolling hills covered with vineyards, lots of wineries and far fewer tourists.
To give you an idea how bicyclists feel about the Napa Valley, it was proposed that the Napa Valley host the bicycling events if San Francisco was awarded the 2012 Summer Olympics. (It wasn't.) It's not known if San Francisco Olympic organizers were aware that the Olympics occur at the same time as Crush, and what effect tens of thousands of visitors would have on a successful harvest.
