Robert Mondavi Summer Festival

Robert Mondavi Winery

Oakville CA 94562

707.226.1395

www.robertmondavi.com/

Margrit Biever Mondavi, vice president of cultural affairs at the Robert Mondavi Winery and wife of the late founder, has made this her pet project since 1969. Concerts are open-air, held on the winery's main lawn, and take place in June, July and August. Most concerts begin at 7 p.m., with gates open for picnicking.

A past entertainment lineup gives an idea of the outstanding quality of the perforners: New Orleans' Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Cesaria Evora, Buena Vista Social Club, Dan Fogelberg, and Dave Koz.

Wine and cheese tasting are offered at intermission. 2001 tickets ranged from $42-$75, depending on the performer. While children are allowed, we've seldom seen any there.

It's an elegantly casual affair, with most attending in jeans and shorts but some finely dressed. Picnic baskets brought by guests range from French bread and cheese to elegantly prepared meals served with fine china and crystal. It's great fun and outstanding entertainment. Tickets, which go on sale the end of April, go fast. They're available at the winery and all BASS outlets. A sign at the front of the winery, easily visible from Highway 29, shows the season's schedule and ticket availability.

Robert Mondavi Winery

Robert Mondavi Winery—the catalyst that changed the wine industry in the Napa Valley. (Photo courtesy of the winery.)

The place that rekindled the Napa Valley wine industry. Opened in 1967, it was only the third winery built in the valley after Prohibition—that weird "experiment" from 1920-1933 when Americans decided they didn't want to let themselves drink alcohol. (The first post-Prohibition winery was Sunny St. Helena, now called Merryvale; second was the still-existing Sony Hill).

Founder Robert Mondavi has a well deserved reputation as a wine-making icon, and his public relations efforts have benefited every winery and person in the valley. His namesake winery is now owned by Constellation Brands.

Visitors to Mondavi can find beautiful Spanish-mission style architecture, excellent tours, wonderful wines, frequent art shows and the winery's famous annual Mondavi Summer Music Festival.

If you've never before visited the valley, this is a must stop. Even if you're a frequent visitor, you'll want to stop by again and again. Don't miss the beautiful Beniamino Bufano statue of St. Francis at the main entrance. Fumé Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc.

Wine Bars

If you'd like to sample wines from a variety of wineries, but your visiting time is limited, consider wine bars. Wine bars offer you the opportunity to taste wines from a number of wineries at a single location.

In the past year, the number of wine tasting bars in the Napa Valley has greatly increased. There is a fee for sampling the wines, but the wine bars are convenient and they also give you a chance to try hard-to-find, limited-production wines.
