Napa Valley, California

Yountville Restaurants, Food & DrinkYountville probably has more gourmet restaurants per capita than any place else in the country. And it has... the French Laundry...named the best restaurant almost anywhere by almost everybody. And that's just one of Yountville's restaurants. You'll love them all, whether French, California Wine Country, Grill, Italian, Mexican—or just a quick, but excellent, burger and fries. |
Ad Hoc
6476 Washington Street
Yountville CA 94599
707.944.2487
Comfort Food - $48 prix fixe
Yet another Thomas Keller restaurant (French Laundry, Bouchon). Originally it was only going to be open for a short while and then replaced by a Keller burger joint (since its existence was to be fleeting, Keller tentatively considered calling it "Brigadoon", after the Broadway musical's Scottish village that appeared briefly once every 100 years.)
Ad Hoc is now permanent, and Keller will flip burgers at a location in the same building, inspired by one of his favorite places, In-n-Out Burger.
Four-course (includes salad course, protein with vegetables, cheese course and dessert) prix fixe menu that changes daily. It's on the site of the former Wine Garden and the legendary, and sadly departed, Diner. Open 5 pm - 9:30 pm, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Corkage $10. No reservations. Call for the day's menu.

Domaine Chandon Winery—The étoile Restaurant
1 California Drive
Yountville CA 94599
707.944.2280
French-inspired California - Entrees $18-$29
Directions: West side of Highway 29 (at Yountville). Take the Veterans Home exit. Cross railroad track and turn right into Domaine Chandon.
Domaine Chandon is owned by Moët et Chandon, and its sparkling wines are superb. It also offers an excellent tour, giving you a chance to see how sparkling wine is made, which is a quite different process from the "still" wines made in most other Napa Valley wineries (although Chandon is starting to produce some still wines).
Domaine Chandon's restaurant—The étoile Restaurant—is one of the most outstanding in the valley. The food, presentation, service and views are superb. Unless you're very lucky, you'll need reservations well in advance.

French Laundry Restaurant
6640 Washington
Yountville CA 94599
707.944.2380
French Laundryish - $240 prix fixe
Thee stars (The highest rating and the only one in the Bay Area) in the Michelin Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area. The French Laundry is considered by many to be the finest restaurant in the (at least) United States.
Reservations are made 60 days in advance, but once in a while they actually get a cancellation and the vacancy could be yours. Reservations got even harder when Chef Thomas Keller was named the top chef in America by the James Beard Foundation.
Then the New York Times called the Laundry the "most exciting restaurant in the United States." In 2002 Keller was named the first-ever World Master of Culinary Arts, competing against top chefs from all over the world. And to top it off, Restaurant magazine in the U.K., polling 300 chefs and food critics around the world, has several times declared the Laundry the "best restaurant in the world".
The French Laundry is a fixed-price restaurant with two separate menus: Nine-course Chef's Tasting Menu, and the nine-course Vegetable Tasting Menu. Jackets required for men.

Hurley's Restaurant and Bar
6518 Washington Street
Yountville CA 94599
707.944.2345
Wine Country - Entrees $18-$29
Bob Hurley is one of Yountville's favorite chefs—and that's saying a lot in this town with so many outstanding restaurants. Formerly at the Napa Valley Grille, he now has his own place across the street from Vintage 1870. Hurley serves fresh seasonal wine country food with a Mediterranean flair. Fun and casual with outdoor dining in the patio.
Mustard's Grill
7399 St. Helena Highway (Highway 29)
Yountville CA 94599
707.944.2424
Wine Country - Entrees $17.25-$24.95
One of the most popular restaurants in the Napa Valley and one of the pioneers of California Cuisine. And one of the best. If you try the Mongolian pork chops, you might end up asking for them every time. However, if it's within your price range, try the filet mignon; it's pure manna from heaven and simply melts in your mouth. Mustard's prides itself on its outrageously comprehensive wine list (nearly 400 wines at last count) and the highly professional staff is well educated and able to advise you on an appropriate wine for your meal. Mustard's is truly a dining experience.
